MPG-200 final hw version finished

Just finished what I hope will be the final version of the MPG-200 hardware, correcting the small mistakes with the previous verson. Will probably order a batch from dirtypcbs soon.

  1. Hello Joakim, I have a JX3P without the PG-200. I'm interested in building your MPG-200. Is this project available as a kit and is it possible to see your final h/w project?
    thank you

    1. Hi! The MPG-200 is mostly SMD components, and all the magic happens inside a microcontroller. I have no way of programming the microcontroller without soldering it to the PCB with 50% of the other components, so unfortunately no kit is available at this time.

I would be more than happy to sell you a completed one once I get the circuit boards (I ordered them yesterday but they take a while to arrive). The current version has no enclosure so you have to source one yourself if you want it inside a box.

I don't know if you've read my other posts, but you have to be aware that the MPG-200 is not a replacement for the JX-3P kiwitech-upgrade. It replaces the PG-200 but doesn't change the JX itself, which means that you still have to switch between the programmer and midi in. I have made it possible to automate the switching so you can run both midi and PG-200 signals through the same midi cable, but it still takes a bit of time each time the JX switches mode so playing the JX through midi while tweaking it using the MPG-200 will not be ideal.

That said, as a PG-200 replacement it will work great and give you all the functionality of the PG-200 using any other midi controller.

PS: The hw is very similar to the one in this post: http://atosynth.blogspot.no/2015/05/mpg-200-hardware-verified.html - a few components have been removed but the form factor (70 x 22 mm approx) is the same.

PPS: I first posted this comment separately but moved it to an answer to your post now in case you didn't read it.

  4. Joakim, so the potentiometers & switches will be separate from the MPG200 processor board? ...the potentiometer board could be a kit
with a bit of drilling, It would be interesting to have the knobs mounted on the JX3p panel itself, not on an external box.. more like the juno-106. anyways, let me know what the price would be. Thanks and congrats on the new baby girl. I have a daughter as well, so I'm a proud daddy.. take care

    1. Yes, the MPG200 is intended as a converter between a midi controller (box with pots and switches) or a DAW and the JX-3P.

It would be possible to build a separate pots board but I would have to modify the MPG200 to read the pots. Not a very big task, but the PCB to solder the pots to would cost quite a bit in small quantities. The pots, potmeter caps and switches will cost a lot too, so a kit would end up being quite expensive. To be honest, you may be better off buying the Mode machines PG-200 clone and use that if you do not need the midi input.

I'll keep you updated about the price etc.

It would love to have the knobs mounted on the JX-3P as well though, looks very cool!

Thanks btw, I am indeed a proud daddy too. It's a lot of work but it's so rewarding as well :-)

  5. Hi I also have a jx3p which I have almost finished renovating and a pg200 type interface would be great to biulkd into the synth but when I tried to download the pg200 protocol files, I get the error 404 type message for no files existing?? Is there a way for me to get these files? Thanks. Carl

    1. Hi! I am not entirely certain what file you are referring to. I have not made the source code and board design for the mpg-200 publicly available, but the decoded protocol can be found at my site here: http://xonik.no/mpg-200/pg-200/pg-200.html

I intend to sell a populated but unboxed version, the one in the picture in this post: http://atosynth.blogspot.no/2015/05/mpg-200-hardware-verified.html. If you want one without the midi socket attached for easier installation that is of course also no problem. I am looking for someone to beta test the mpg-200, and the person will get the device at a slight discount. Contact me at tysseng at gmail if you are interested.
